Ghana movie awards 2018: The movie ‘Azali’ tops with 15 nominations

Ahead of the official release, Graphic Showbiz can state on authority that Azali, a Ghanaian movie which seeks to expose the dangers of child labour, child abuse, streetism and child marriage across Africa has been nominated in 15 out of the 20 competitive categories of this year’s Ghana Movie Award(GMA) which comes off on Sunday, December 23 at Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast, Accra.

Following closely on the heels of Azali is Bad Luck Joe with 11 nods while Silence gets the third place with nine nominations.

This is the second time a movie has bagged 15 nominations in the eight years history of the GMA organised by Gollywood Production Ltd.

In 2015, the Beast of No Nation received 15 nominations and won 11 of them.

Some of the categories Azali has been nominated in are Lead Actor, Lead Actress, Editing, Original Song, Cinematography, Visual Effects, Directing, Original Score, Writing Adapted Or Original Screenplay and Production Design.

Azali produced by Ananse Entertainment and directed by Kwabena Gyansah is a movie in Dagbani, Akan, Pidgin and English with English subtitles.

The 92-minutes movie features some A-list actors such as Adjetey Anang, Ama K. Abebrese, Akorfa Edjeani as well as some unknown ones like Asana Alhassan who plays the lead role Asana.

Azali tells the story of Amina(Asana Alhassan), a 14-year-old girl living in northern Ghana. Her mother chooses to send her to work in Burkina Faso to prevent her from getting married off to a much older man. Her choice leaves Amina in the hands of a child-smuggling syndicate.

She and other victims are rescued and sent to an orphanage for resettlement in their various homes, but they decide to escape to Accra in search of a better life.

She ends up in the slums of Accra and must find ways to endure life as she struggles to find her way back home.

Well, it is not too much of a surprise that Azali has earned this number of nominations as it has received good reviews since the beginning of the year.

The movie has grabbed international awards such as Best Actress (Asana Alhassan), Best Screenplay and Best Feature Film at the 2018 Africa International Film Festival Globe Awards at Lagos, Nigeria.
